Marcel Lajos (Lajko) Breuer, FAIA (1902-1981)

Marcel Lajos Breuer was born on 21 May 1902. He was a modernist architect and furniture designer of Hungarian-German origin. In 1921, he attended the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany, founded by Walter Gropius, known for its holistic approach to teaching the arts and architecture.

Breuer wed Martha Erps in 1926. They departed Berlin in 1932 and fled for London in 1935, after which they relocated to America in 1937 after Gropius offered him a coaching job at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.
