Stuart Oliver Baesel was born in Charlotte. In 1940, he graduated from Central High School. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill during World War II, served in the Army Air Force, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in structure from NCSU in 1949. In 1949, Betsy London married at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh, then completed postgraduate paintings in Cranbrook, Michigan, and Fontainebleau, France. Before settling in La Jolla, CA 1972, they lived in Charlotte, New York, and Columbia, SC. Both died in 2009.
